Stone 101

Plain-English guide to the stone in your home. How to tell marble from quartzite, which materials hold up in Arizona conditions, and why different stones behave the way they do. Natural stone is not one material. Marble, travertine and limestone are calcium-based, so acids like lemon juice, vinegar and many household cleaners can etch them. Granite and quartzite are harder and shrug off most of that, but they still have natural fissures and still depend on the right sealer. Quartz countertops are engineered rather than quarried and follow different rules again. Knowing which one you own changes how you clean it, what you set on it, and what a professional can and cannot fix. The articles here start with the basics: what your stone is made of, what a finish like honed or polished means, why sealing helps with staining but not with etching, and how to read the marks that show up over time. Read these first if you are new to stone care or just moved into a home with stone floors, counters or a patio. When a question needs eyes on the surface, the Stone Care of Arizona team is glad to take a look.

Does Sealing Stone Actually Prevent Etching?

Sealing does not prevent etching, because a sealer slows absorption and etching dissolves the surface itself. What sealing does protect against, and what does not.

Granite handles heat better than almost anything else in a kitchen, and the real risks are thermal shock at a natural fissure and a sealer that fails in one spot. Quartz, marble, and porcelain answer the same question differently.

Not sure this is the right topic? Three questions usually sort it out. First, what is the stone? Marble, travertine and limestone are calcium-based and react to acid, granite and quartzite are harder, and quartz is engineered rather than quarried. Stone 101 covers that.

Second, is the surface dirty or damaged? Soil sitting in travertine pits or grout lines is a cleaning problem, and Cleaning and Sealing explains what professional extraction reaches that mopping cannot. A mark you can feel with a dry fingertip is missing stone rather than dirt, and Polishing and Restoration covers how honing and polishing put it back.

Third, where is it? Grout lines and showers are under Tile and Grout. Patios, pool decks, flagstone and pavers are under Outdoor Stone, where Arizona sun, monsoon dust and hard water change the answers. Everything about keeping a surface from getting to that point is in Care and Maintenance.
