How do I know if my stone has a topical coating or a penetrating sealer?
Look at how it fails. A topical coating sits on the surface, so it scratches, clouds, yellows, and peels, and dirt gets trapped under it. A penetrating sealer works below the surface and leaves the stone looking natural; when it wears, water simply starts soaking in and darkening the stone instead of beading.
Do you strip wax off Saltillo and terracotta floors?
Yes. Old wax and topical sealers are stripped off the tile and out of the grout lines so the clay can be deep cleaned and sealed again. It is most of what Saltillo and terracotta restoration is.
What happens after the stone is stripped?
The stone is deep cleaned, then honed or polished if the finish needs it, then sealed with a penetrating sealer. Stripping prepares the surface for all three, and it is the reason the new finish bonds properly.
Will stripping damage the grout or the stone?
Not with the right products. We use non-acidic, stone-safe stripping agents made for marble, travertine, limestone, and other natural stones, and the coating is lifted out of the grout lines rather than scrubbed off them. Harsh store-bought strippers are what damage natural stone and leave uneven results.
