Onyx Problems We Fix in Scottsdale and Phoenix Homes

Onyx is a soft, translucent, calcium-based stone, which makes it beautiful and easy to damage. These are the problems that bring onyx owners to us.

Etching from acids. Onyx marks faster than marble. A splash of citrus or a bathroom cleaner leaves a dull spot in the glass-like finish.
Fine scratches across the polish. Onyx is soft, so rings, keys, and gritty cloths scratch it, and the scratches show because the surface is so clear.
Stains in the veining. Onyx is porous along its bands, and colored liquids can travel into the stone if it is not sealed.
Cloudy patches on polished onyx. Light passes through onyx, so any haze, etch, or residue shows more than it would on an opaque stone.
Chips at edges. Soft stone chips at vanity edges and shower niches, and a chipped edge on onyx is hard to hide without professional blending.

How We Restore Onyx Countertops, Vanities, and Walls

Onyx restoration is slow, careful work with gentle products. Your free in-home estimate tells you which steps your onyx needs.

Assess. We check the finish, map etching and scratches, and look at how the stone is lit and installed before anything touches it.
Clean. Gentle, stone-safe, pH-neutral products lift residue and film without dulling or etching the surface.
Hone. Fine diamond honing removes etching and scratches while keeping the surface flat and the translucency intact.
Polish. Onyx can achieve a brilliant, glass-like finish when polished correctly, using techniques that enhance its natural translucency without damage.
Repair. Chips and cracks are filled and blended with the stone's color and pattern.
Seal. A penetrating sealer slows staining without changing how light moves through the stone.

Onyx Care Between Professional Visits

Onyx rewards gentle habits.

Use a pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaner made for natural stone, and a soft cloth.
Keep vinegar, bleach, and acidic products away from onyx. They dull and etch the surface on contact.
Wipe spills immediately, especially anything colored or acidic.
Set glasses and bottles on coasters and keep keys and jewelry off onyx counters. Soft stone scratches easily.

Is onyx more delicate than other natural stones?

Why do haze and etch marks show more on onyx than on other stone?

Light passes through onyx, so any etch, haze, or residue on the surface shows more than it would on an opaque stone. Fine diamond honing removes the marks while keeping the surface flat and the translucency intact, and polishing brings the glass-like finish back.

Why does my onyx counter etch so easily?

Onyx is a soft, calcium-based stone, so acids react with it faster than they do with marble. Citrus, vinegar, wine, and most bathroom cleaners leave dull etch marks. Honing and polishing remove them; sealing and gentle cleaning slow the next ones.

Do you restore onyx wall panels and vanities, or only countertops?

All of them. Onyx counters, vanity tops, and wall panels get the same careful sequence: gentle pH-neutral cleaning, fine honing, polishing, and a penetrating sealer that slows staining without changing how light moves through the stone. We look at how the stone is lit and installed before anything touches it.

Do you repair chips and scratches in onyx?

Yes. Scratches are honed and polished out, and chips are filled and blended with the stone's color and pattern, in place.
