Travertine Cleaning and Sealing

Travertine Cleaning and Sealing
Today, there are fundamental ways to clean Travertine, Marble, Onyx, Limestone, and man-made Porcelain & Ceramic tile floors. If you have a different type of floor, no worries all floors can be cleaned with the basic cleaning method shared in this article.

The cleaning methods range from “acidic mopping solutions” to “alkaline mopping solutions.” The reason there are conflicting cleaning methodologies is centered on the way the housekeeping services have not been formally trained on how to mop your floors.

We recently received a call from a homeowner who was worried about the damage their team created on their client residence Travetine mosaic shower floors. In the picture below, you will notice a housekeeper poured concentrated bleach on the marble floors. On closer inspection, the squirting swirls were from a powerful alkaline cleaner. Apparently, the housekeeping service was trying to remove calcium magnesium. Sadly, you cannot use acid-based cleaners or powerful alkalines such as bleach on Travertine, Marble, Onyx, Limestone, Terrazzo, and Agglomerate.
Travertine Cleaning in Phoenix Arizona
We have established in our many posts that many homeowners and housekeeping services do not use the correct mopping technology. Most housekeeping services learn on the job and mostly by antidotal dissemination. The key to successfully maintaining natural stone, tile and keeping your grout clean is to verify that your housekeeping employees have been properly trained on how to clean your floors. Make sure they are not using powerful alkaline and vinegar on your floors. Mopping your floors with vinegar and bleach can destroy the shine over time. Housekeepers often use a popular alkaline that unwittingly creates a soil magnet on your floors and grout.

In this article, Stone Care of Arizona, LLC, the Travertine cleaning expert in the North valley of Phoenix, Arizona will share 5 tips on “How to Clean Your Travertine floors. If you need advice, please give us a call at 480-625-0557.

Below are 5 tips for your consideration:

TIP 1: USE THE CORRECT CLEANING EQUIPMENT

Selecting the right mopping equipment is the foundation for successfully cleaning your Travertine flooring. There are several mopping options on the market. We recommend that you purchase a Rubbermaid® mopping system or another system of equal or greater quality. Depending on the size of your home you will need to purchase a sufficient number of microfiber mop heads.

TIP 2: USE THE CORRECT DRY SOIL REMOVAL TECHNIQUE

Your first line of defense in keeping Travertine floors clean and shiny is to have a soil prevention protocol in place. This is not limited to having absorbent doormats at all entrances and exits. Absorbent door mats trap soil within their intertwining mesh. All doormats should be cleaned and rinsed off once a week. Family members should agree to take their shoes off and clean-up any spills that may occur. Lastly, it is very important to sweep or vacuum the dry abrasives on your floors once a week. Over time, dry abrasives can damage the polished appearance of Travertine tile.

TIP 3: USE THE CORRECT MOPPING SOLUTION

The safest cleaning solution to clean your Travertine in Phoenix, Arizona is a neutral cleaner. The neutral cleaner will remove unwanted substances without damaging any floor it is used on. Zep neutral floor cleaner is concentrated and should be diluted with water. Zep neutral floor cleaner can be purchased at most hardware stores like Home Depot, Ace and Walmart in your area. Be sure to mix per the directions.

4. USE THE CORRECT MOPPING TECHNIQUE

It is very important that the correct mopping technique is used when mopping your Travertine floors. If you purchased a Rubbermade® system you now are ready. When mopping Travertine, Marble, Limestone and tile and grout with a microfiber mop, it is important to limit damp mopping to less than 400 square feet. Be sure to rinse the mop out or change out microfiber mop heads regularly to prevent soil load. Soil load leads to streaks on the flooring being mopped. Turn on ceiling fans or use a floor fan to dry. This ensures no one experiences a slip and fall accident.

5. PROFESSIONALLY CLEAN AND SEAL TRAVERTINE

It is very important that a homeowner hires a company to professionally clean and seal their Travertine at least once a year. Stone Care of Arizona the natural stone care expert is here to help you.
