Earlier we touched on homeowners passing on Engineered stone, commonly referred as Quartz countertops. In the next section, we are going to provide some compelling reasons why.
QUARTZ OR ENGINEERED STONE COUNTERTOPS:
During the early 60's and early 70's Bentonstone® the agglomerated stone was created in North Italy. Most homeowners are not familiar with the origins of Agglomerates. In the marketplace Agglomerates stone are called by multiple names not limited to composite stone, engineered stone, and Quartz. What is engineered stone? How is it made? Whether, referred to as Engineered stone, Agglomerates, Composites or Quartz their composition is essentially a hybrid of natural stone and man made materials. Engineered stone or Quartz is composed of 80 to 90% natural stone fragments, polymer mixture, pigments (color) glitter and 5 to 10% resinous materials. The mixture is baked in a mold in the size of a slab and comes honed, satin, and polished finishes. (Manufactures composition and ratios may defer)

Below are some videos of how Quartz or Engineered Stone is made.
Today, most agglomerate stone is licensed to more than 60 companies around the world who use a whole or part of Breton engineered stone technologies.

Below is a short list of names:
  • Caesarstone.
  • Silestone
  • Cambria Quartz
  • Santa Margherita Quartz
  • Viatera Quartz
  • Okite Quartz
  • Corian Quartz
  • Granite Transformations.
  • HanStone Quartz
  • MSI Q Quartz
  • IceStone Quartz
  • Concetto by Caesarstone
As shared, the above Quartz or Engineered stones are variations of the original patent by Breton technologies in north Italy. If you would like to see their patent, select the link on the right: Engineered Stone Countertop Patent.

PLEASE NOTE: The above listed Quartz offerings are high quality and will preform as they are advertised. This is not the case for the cheap and low quality engineered stones that are flooding the marketplace and giving homeowners nightmares. Cheaply manufactured to meet a low price point, these cheap engineered stones is the reason savvy homeowner are squeamish about purchasing based on online reviews.

Stone Care of Arizona penned an informative article part 1 & 2 outlying 5 reasons homeowners are squeamish about purchasing Quartz countertops, we spill the beans in the articles, select the article here: 5 misconceptions About Quartz Countertops. Why are so many homeowners disappointed after purchasing homes with cheap engineered stones? Read the next section and we provide just a few compelling reasons.

DISADVANTAGE OF ENGINEERED STONE:
Below are common issues we have personally seen and have documented with comprehensive images.

Below are a few minor to major issues below:
  • Engineered stone surfaces are not stain proof: The surface can become stained along the resinous sectors with substances such as ink, hot oils, beverage dyes. beets, oil-based paint, curry, turmeric, hot coffee and tea. Surface is subject to chemical burns (paints lacquer and such) from certain harsh chemicals.
  • Engineered stone surfaces are not scratch proof: The surface can be scratched with hard objects and sharp knives.
  • Engineered stone surfaces are not melt proof: The surface can be dissolve and melt when hot cooking pots, toasters, portable ovens and portable skillets come in contact or with prolong use in one location.
  • Engineered stone surfaces are not chip proof: The surface can crack, ding and chip along the profile and surface with a blunt force and shifting vanity and substrate shifting on the foundation.
  • Engineered stone surfaces are not warp proof: The countertop can have seam issues related to warping from direct sunlight (extreme cases)
  • Engineered stone surfaces can lose its shine: The shine is lost in direct sunlight, abrasive cleansers, abrasive scouring pads and aggressive alkaline and acid cleaners. Tape can pull off shine and leave a "tape shadow" on the countertop surface.
Sadly, some of the listed issues are irreparable and will lead to a lifetime of disfigurement. Homeowners have shared their displeasure after a great investment to their chagrin to discovered that their engineered stones "does not" have bullet proof qualities. We suggest you do your homework, before investing a boatload of money for any countertop upgrades. Read the reviews, why? Unsatisfied customers are very chatty online.

There are reasons that Granite is the undisputed King of countertops, let's explore this more in the next section.

GRANITE THE UNDISPUTED KING

Granite countertops are the undisputed king of all countertops, why? Granite is marveled and selected for its beauty and lasting durability. Since Granite is installed in kitchens and bathroom it is very important for Granite to be professionally cleaned, disinfected and sealed afterwards. Granite is an naturally occurring siliceous countertop and is not acid sensitive like its counterpart, Marble countertops, Travertine countertop and, Limestone countertops. Granite is fabricated and installed on fireplaces, vanities, sinks, bathtubs, showers, benches, bathtubs, walls, backslashes, mantels, bars, outlet switch plate, coffee table, dinning room tables, desks, etc.

Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert receives lots of questions regarding sealing their Granite countertops. Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert penned a very informative article, click here to read: 3 Misconceptions about sealing Grout & Floors. The foundational content applies to all Marble, Travertine, Onyx and Limestone, tile & grout sealing and Granite countertop sealing.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SEALING GRANITE COUNTERTOPS:
Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert recommends that "all" Granite countertops be sealed, why? Good question, Granite has micro-pores of all types and, minerals in the form of granular rock of all sizes, and various crystallizations. Due to these factors, Granite countertops can be extremely dense due to where they are harvested, how? Granite is an intrusive (inside the volcano) and igneous granulate rock that becomes crystallized inside a volcano.

In the illustration below is an illustration to help explain the Rock cycle.
The Rock Cycle
As shared, Granite countertops require sealing due to their microscopic pores so as to prevent water to pass. The application of impregnating sealer will apply a thin layer of resin polymer that deposits material over the micro-pores and once it has dried it will create water and oil repellency. It prevents unwanted substances from passing and yet allows the Granite countertop to breath. Stone Care of Arizona uses a porous plus impregnating sealer that formulated for denser stone. Give Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert a call at 480-625-0557.
Granite countertops sealing is part of the three-legged stool process. The three legged stool process is based on three silos.
  1. The dedicated cleaning step,
  2. The disinfection step
  3. The application of the sealer step.
LET'S EXPLORE THE VALUE OF EACH LEG:

LEG #1: THE DEDICATED CLEANING STEP:
Stone Care of Arizona focuses on cleaning the Granite countertop to emulsify and suspend unwanted soil. Unbeknownst to most homeowners is the fact their Granite is saturated with oily substances that need to be removed before safe disinfection. The countertops soil is hydrophobic (water hating) and lipophobic (oil hating). This means, hand cleaning will not be able to remove persistent soil. Couple this, the trapped soil are layered over active bacteria and viruses as a microbial mat.

We penned an informative article regarding the unique interactions of soil and germs, viruses and COVID-19:

Get access here: How to Clean Countertops. Once the surface of the Granite is squeaky clean we move to Leg #2.
LEG #2: THE DISINFECTION STEP:
Stone Care of Arizona will apply a generous amount of botanical based disinfectant on the Granite countertop that actively kill germs, viruses, bacteria, various pathogens and COVID-19. We agitate the area and allow to soak for 3 mins for a maximum "kill zone" of germs and visions. This will indeed allow the disinfection process of the countertop to break the microbial mat or water resistance barrier preventing disinfecting penetration. This lays waste to the any microbial issues on the countertop and now the Granite countertop is clean and disinfected ready for sealing.

Stone Care of Arizona pinned another articles on the subject, 4 misconceptions on how to Disinfect countertops

LEG #3: THE SEALING STEP:
Stone Care of Arizona applies a porous plus sealer based on the Granite's porosity and permeability. Is there a difference? Absolutely!

THE REPELLENCY ANALYSIS:
  • POROSITY: Porosity is the measurement based on air pockets between Granite grains, micro-pores and inner cavities of the Granite substrate.
  • PERMEABILITY: Permeability is a measure based on how fluids and how they pass through the Granite porous substrate.
Both measurements are factored in when applying sealers on Granite countertops. Not all sealers types are same! Cheap sealer! Cheap Results! High Quality Sealer Leads to High Quality Results!!!!

Homeowners frequently asked very good questions about the sealing of their Granite Countertops. Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert would like to share a few frequently asked questions about sealing Granite countertops
FAQs
1. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR GRANITE IS SEALED?
Stone Care of Arizona, the Arizona stone care expert can identify whether a Granite countertop is properly sealed. Stone Care of Arizona offers a free inspection that includes testing your Granite. We call is a "repellency test" on the Granite countertop.

THE REPELLENCY TEST:
  • Dip your fingertips with tap water nearest to the facet
  • Lightly flick your wet fingers over the Granite
  • Observe how the droplets hit the surface of the Granite
  • The water will splatter when there is no seal protection
  • The water will repels when there is seal protection
The image below is an example of water "repelling" on the surface of a Granite countertop. Sorry! we cheated we sealed the Granite beforehand!
Granite
Stone Care of Arizona is looking to see if the water hitting the surface "repels or splatters."
Spatters: NEGATIVE results means the Granite is not sealed
Repels: POSITIVE results means the Granite is sealed

Simply stated, properly sealed Granite countertops should repel water. When the Granite spatters on the surface it means the Granite countertop was not properly sealed.

Please note: Heavily soiled countertops will provide a false reading due to oily soil and microbial buildup. Lastly, never allow your handyman or housekeeper to seal your countertop. The sealer will not preform well.

2. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOUR GRANITE BE SEALED?
The question is better asked, when was the Granite countertop "CLEANED," Why?

Stone Care of Arizona meets to types of homeowners:

1. INHERITED THEIR GRANITE COUNTERTOP
Most homeowners are unaware the Granite is extremely filthy prior to moving into their home. We apologize for the descriptive words that should alarm you since the previous homeowner’s DNA and germs, bacteria, and active organisms "require" professional cleaning, disinfecting and sealing prior to your moving into the home. The question of when the Granite countertop was cleaned is apropos. If you did not professionally clean and seal the Granite countertop prior to your moving into your home, please give Stone Care of Arizona a call at 480-625-0557

2. INSTALLED THEIR GRANITE COUNTERTOP
Most homeowners who installed their Granite countertop have a better assessment of when and if their Granite countertop was professional cleaned and sealed or not. We love housekeepers, they provide Stone Care of Arizona work whenever they make preventable mistakes in applying the wrong cleaner and sealer on Granite countertops. When an alkaline is repeatedly used to clean the Granite countertop inside the home it will eventually leave a cleaner residue that helps bond the soil and promote microbial growth. The only way to thoroughly remove unwanted soil is by having your Granite countertops professionally cleaned, disinfected and sealed by Stone Care of Arizona.

How often should the Granite Countertop be “cleaned” sealed? The Granite countertops in your home should be professionally cleaned and sealed every 12 to 24 months. More often if you are a power user on the Granite showers and countertops in bathrooms and kitchen areas.

3. WHAT IS THE GRANITE SEALING PROCESS?
There are several types of sealers used in the Greater Phoenix Area:
a. Water based sealer (penetrating sealer)
b. Oil-based sealer (Impregnating sealer and Impregnating porous plus)
c. Silicone based sealer (not recommended for seal Granite)
d. Top-coat polymer sealer (not recommended for applying Granite)

The terms penetrating and impregnating sealer are often used interchangeably. The penetrating and impregnating sealer allows the Granite to breath after application.

Stone Care of Arizona, the granite sealing expert uses a breathable, impregnating porous plus for Granite sealing. The fine distinction is the porous plus is formulated to work better on denser stones like Granite, slate, flagstone.

Here are Basic Stone Care of Arizona Steps Below:
1. Once the Granite has been professionally cleaned
2. We disinfect the Granite to kill germs, viruses and pathogens
3. We buff the surface with a microfiber towel. It helps to remove smudges and any residual contamination.
4. We apply a copious application of porous plus, impregnating sealer based on our repellency test.

Stone Care of Arizona’s goal is to penetrate the micro-pores of Granite countertop to create repellency. It takes 72 hours to cure. If you desire Granite cleaning, disinfecting and sealing give us a call at 480-625-0557.

4. HOW SHOULD I TAKE CARE OF THE GRANITE ONCE IT IS SEALED?
The major culprit for deactivation of any sealer applied on a Granite countertop is based on the homeowners or housekeeping aftercare.

Here are a few valuable cleaning tips:
1. Please use a neutral cleaner for maintenance cleaning
2. Limit the use of an alkaline based cleaner since they strip off the protective barrier
3. Use a professional squeegee whenever possible to move soil into the sink or into a puddle and wipe up excess with a terry cloth towel.
4. Take a microfiber towel and buff off the countertop. The microfiber towel will remove swirls and microorganism off as you buff.

There are several ways for you to help your Granite countertop to perform well. Hiring Stone Care of Arizona, the Granite countertop cleaning, disinfecting and sealing expert is the ideal way to limit soil, germs and pathogens from becoming trapped on the surface, please give Stone Care of Arizona, the granite cleaning and sealing expert a call at 480-625-0557

5. WHY DO GRANITE COUNTERTOPS CRACK?
Granite is harvested from a mountain and cut into a dimension stone. The dimension stone is next cut into slabs with a thickness of into either 3/4″ or 2”. The cut slabs go through a finishing process. The granite slab weigh can vary from 18-30 pounds per square foot. The rule of thumb is that darker granite slabs are usually heavier than the lighter granite slabs.
